Jorge Soler to Angels Headlines First Trade of Offseason

0

The off-season is officially underway and teams are not wasting any time looking towards the 2025 season. On Thursday afternoon, a deal between the Los Angeles Angels and the Atlanta Braves has been finalized. The Angels are receiving outfielder/designated hitter Jorge Soler and in return, they are sending right-handed pitcher Griffin Canning to the Braves.

Soler signed a three-year, $42 million deal with the San Francisco Giants prior to last season. He went on to play 93 games with them before being traded back to the Braves. The 32-year-old power hitter had a solid 2024 campaign, despite seeing a dip in home runs. He slashed .241/.338/.442/.780 with 21 home runs, 64 runs batted in and 141 strikeouts in 574 plate appearances.

Soler will provide the Angels with another power bat in the middle of the order to go along with Mike TroutTaylor Ward and Logan O’Hoppe.

Canning, now 28 years old, has been a big-league starter for the Angels since April 2019. He has struggled quite a bit, pitching to a 4.78 ERA over 94 starts. Canning threw a career-high 171 2/3 innings last season, going 6-13 with a 5.19 ERA in 32 appearances. The trade will provide him with a change of scenery, something that could significantly benefit him in 2025.

With Charlie Morton and Max Fried being impending free agents, the Braves may need help at the back end of the rotation.
