Authorities have a warning for convicted Sex Offenders on Halloween
OPELOUSAS, La. (KLFY)-- State law prohibits sex offenders from participating in Halloween activities involving children, including wearing masks and passing out candy.
Some states require offenders to display yard signs reading, 'No candy at this residence,' but Louisiana doesn't.
St. Landry Parish Sheriff Bobby Guidroz warns parents of the sex offenders passing out candy to trick or treaters.
"They cannot have their porch lights on," Sheriff Guidroz said. "They can't even go to the door at a knock during Halloween."
Sheriff Guidroz said no sex offenders were arrested in this office's patrols during this year's early trick or treating in St. Landry Parish.
"We have 206 offenders in St. Landry Parish, and we had five deputies on overtime last night working in the parish to make sure that we don't have any issues with sex offenders giving out candy," Sheriff Guidroz said. ""It's been, I think, two years since we've actually had offenders arrested for distributing candy on a holiday."
Sex offenders who are arrested can face six months to three years in jail.
