$10K offered for details on person who shot NYS trooper: 'Someone knows something'

NEW YORK (PIX11) – A $10,000 cash reward is being offered to anyone who can provide information leading to an arrest and conviction of the person who shot a New York state trooper on Wednesday night.

Citizens Outraged at Police Being Shot (COP SHOT) announced the cash reward on Thursday.

“We understand this Trooper was attempting to see if the motorist needed assistance. For his efforts, he was fired upon and struck by a bullet,” said John Provetto, chairman of COP SHOT. “We hope our $10,000 cash reward will help police apprehend this suspect and take a dangerous criminal off the streets. Someone out there knows something, and we urge them to call our confidential 24/7 COP SHOT hot-line.”

The number for COP SHOT is 1-800-COPSHOT.

State Trooper Thomas Mascia, 27, was patrolling the Southern State Parkway on Long Island when he spotted a black sedan. Before approaching the sedan, he noted a temporary New Jersey license plate that read 997636 T. As Mascia approached the rear of the vehicle, several shots were fired, officials said.

Mascia was wounded in his right leg and was taken to a local hospital to be treated for his injuries. Authorities said he required surgery and is recovering as of late Thursday evening.

The driver of the sedan remains at large, and no arrests have been made.

Anyone with information is urged to call New York State Police Troop L at (631) 756-3300.
