Court denies City of Topeka's request for new trial in police gender discrimination lawsuit

TOPEKA (KSNT) - A U.S. District Court has denied the City of Topeka's request for a new trial after it lost a lawsuit filed by two women with claims of gender discrimination in the police.

Court documents show the City of Topeka was denied its request as it did not meet the "high burden of establishing a complete absence of proof to support the jury's verdict." The court goes on to say the city failed to establish that it was prejudiced by an alleged error.

The City of Topeka requested a new trial on Oct. 17 after it lost a lawsuit filed by Colleen Stuart and Jana Kizzar (Harden) on Sept. 19. The city was ordered to pay the women nearly $500,000.
