Thrillist determined this Portland-area hotel is Oregon's most haunted place

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — A hotel in the Portland metro area has been recognized as Oregon’s most haunted location.

Travel and lifestyle site Thrillist compiled a list of the eeriest sites in each state throughout the U.S., but some have spookier roots than others.

“We're talking old state hospitals, murder sites, homes with talking dolls, and hotels so disturbing, they’ve served as the setting for some of the most iconic horror movies,” Thrillist said.

McMenamins’ Edgefield Hotel was named Oregon’s most haunted spot. According to Thrillist, the Pacific Northwest chain is “known just as well for its peculiarities as it is for its catalog of pubs and breweries.”

The media company primarily mentioned UFO Fest, the two-day event McMenamins hosts every year that centers on all things extraterrestrial. The site is also close to Edgefield Concerts On the Lawn, an outdoor concert venue that attracts music fans from all over the region.

Despite the hotel and surrounding area’s popularity, Thrillist said people should still “keep an eye out.” The company noted the 74-acre property once held the Multnomah County Poor Farm, with a hospital wing and jail.

“During the 1950s before the original site fell into disrepair, the farm treated patients with tuberculosis and mental illnesses, some of whom supposedly still roam the grounds of the now-hotel — and a few of whom are allegedly still buried in unmarked graves on-site,” the travel site said.

According to the Oregon Historical Society, Mike and Brian McMenamin bought the property later in 1990 to build their hotel business. The site was added to the National Register of Historic Places that same year.
