Brittany & Patrick Mahomes Are Reportedly Doubling Down on Their Commitment to Women's Sports
Brittany and Patrick Mahomes planted roots in Kansas City, Missouri and they have made a long-term financial commitment to their adopted hometown. In addition to their women’s soccer team, Kansas City Current, the Mahomes along with co-owners Chris and Angie Long, are looking to bring a WNBA team to their city, per ESPN.
If they can make the expansion team happen, they will have doubled down on their investment in women’s sports. On Oct. 30, ESPN reporter Adam Schefter posted on X, “As WNBA expansion continues, ownership of the NWSL’s KC Current — which includes Patrick Mahomes and his wife, Brittany — has met with the WNBA and is in contention to bring the league’s next franchise to Kansas City. Mahomes also co-owns the KC Royals and Sporting KC.”
According to The Kansas City Star, the women’s basketball league is adding three new cities — Golden State next season and Portland and Toronto the season after. If Kansas City comes into play, it would be the 16th team for the WNBA and hopefully be up and running by 2028. The positive effect of former NCAA players Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese’s presence has made women’s basketball a hot ticket this year.
The Kansas City Chiefs quarterback toasted the success of women’s sports in April at the 2024 Time 100 Gala. “Tonight, I’d like to raise a glass to a new era in sports. An era when the women’s game is finally getting the attention it deserves,” Patrick said. “For a long time, there was this well-meaning but patronizing idea that you should care about women’s sports because that aligns with your values. And sure, there’s some merit to that. But the real reason you should care about women’s sports is because they’re incredible.”
Patrick knows firsthand how talented female athletes are after watching Brittany play college soccer at the University of Texas at Tyler and in Iceland for the club, UMF Afturelding, in 2017.
“I’m proud of the part my family has played in this movement,” Patrick noted of his family’s ownership of the KC Current. “I feel very confident that investment will pay off in more ways than one. We all need to keep investing in the women’s game with our attention, with our media, and with our wallets, because this isn’t a flash in the pan. It’s the future. So here is a toast to the greatness that is women’s sports. It’s been happening and I’m glad the world is catching on.”
The Mahomes are proving to be a Kansas City power couple, who are bringing new opportunities for women’s sports and creating a financial windfall for their hometown.
