Uniqlo and Finnish brand Marimekko are collaborating on another seasonal line this fall that includes lots of layering, shirts with nature motifs, and an autumnal Nordic color palette. (Uniqlo, no stranger to collabs, has recently done ones with JW Anderson and Marni.)

Marimekko has a cult following due to its printmaking history, so combining that with Uniqlo’s functional apparel makes perfect sense. One of the offerings is a Heattech shirt with a leaf print. The collaboration was inspired by “fall foraging and moments in the forest spent with loved ones,” wrote Rebekka Bay, creative director at Marimekko. Leaning into comfort, the line features transitional pieces for women and kids, such as lambswool knitwear, with elevated accessories, like a padded scarf.

Do I need this?

Yes. Marimekko knitwear usually starts at $210, and coats cost about $490, so the Nordic, vibrant prints are usually outside of my budget. However, the Uniqlo collaboration features pieces ranging from $7.90 to $59.90, including a fleece cardigan and turtleneck top, as well as a matching lambswool sweater and miniskirt (my personal favorite). Made with 100 percent wool, both pieces are a good investment.

I tried some Uniqlo x Marimekko pieces here:

UNIQLO x Marimekko Lambswool Sweater

I felt this sweater, and the rest was history. With a buttery texture and neutral colorway, this piece is easy to layer. I paired it with the collection’s miniskirt, tall boots, and an oversize jacket.

UNIQLO x Marimekko Lambswool Mini Skirt

I was dubious this piece would be true to size, but I was pleasantly surprised how the elastic waist sat in all the right spots. I like the A-line silhouette and how I can dress this piece up or down.

UNIQLO x Marimekko Fleece Cardigan

It’s by far my favorite piece from the collection. Living in NYC, you can never have too many jackets (although my closet size disagrees). This piece checks all the boxes in terms of functionality and versatility. The fit is roomy, so no need to size up.

UNIQLO x Marimekko HEATTECH Turtleneck

An affordable layer I recommend time and time again is Uniqlo’s Heattech line. Now, it is available with a pop of Marimekko flare.

UNIQLO x Marimekko Padded Hat

A bucket hat in the fall was not on my radar this year, but with the sun still (sorta) shining, this is an unexpected accessory I am eager to sport this season.

Where can I get it?

Beginning October 31, you can shop the collaboration online and in select stores.

What are people saying?

While most Marimekko and Uniqlo stans filled the Instagram campaign-drop comments with heart-eye emojis and phrases like “jazzed,” the eagerness was intertwined with backlash for the lack of menswear present in the collaboration.

The collection has overall been met with anticipation, with some folks also noting how nervous they are that the collection will sell out. So get it fast!
