Which Spurs attacker offers the best value per goal? We did the math
Spurs have spent a lot of money on their attacking roster, but which player in Ange Postecoglou’s squad offers the best value for each goal they have contributed for the Lilywhites? We sat down and calculated who is the most efficient signing based on their transfer fees and their weekly wage.
Which Spurs player has best value per goal?
Looking at each of the six main attackers in the Tottenham squad right now and the transfer fees that were paid for them, we’ve worked out who has offered the best return on their value based on the goals they have either scored or assisted in their Spurs career to date.
It will come as a surprise to no one that Heung-min Son, who cost the club just £22m back in 2015, has proven to be an absolute bargain if we’re judging him solely on goal contributions. Each goal that the Spurs captain has delivered works out at just £87,649, making it an incredible deal overall.
Interestingly, Dejan Kulusevski comes in second, with each of his 38 goal contributions coming in at £894,736 in relation to his transfer fee. He’s the only other player in the list whose goals and assists have cost less than £1m apiece.
Dominic Solanke, rather unsurprisingly, currently offers the worst value for money in terms of goals, but we would expect and hope that he will end up scoring a lot more goals to reduce that cost over time.
Player | Transfer fee | Goals | Assists | Cost per goal contribution |
---|---|---|---|---|
Heung-min Son | £22m | 165 | 86 | £87,649 |
Dejan Kulusevski | £34m (inc. £8.5m loan fee) | 17 | 21 | £894,736 |
James Maddison | £40m | 6 | 13 | £2.105m |
Richarlison | £60m | 15 | 8 | £2.608m |
Brennan Johnson | £55m | 11 | 10 | £2.619m |
Dominic Solanke | £65m | 3 | 2 | £13m |
Wages for 2024/25
So, what about if we just look at the current season and work things out against the weekly wage each player is earning? Suffice to say, things take a very different spin in that respect.
Let’s say there have now been ten weeks of the season, so we’ll multiply each players’ wages by ten to estimate how much they have earned during this campaign so far.
Thanks to his hot streak of six goals in six games, Brennan Johnson has definitely earned his money this season, with each goal contribution costing just £116,000 this season against his £70k per week wages.
Solanke looks far better value based on this metric, with each goal contribution costing £180,000 against his £90k per week salary. Meanwhile, Richarlison has scored just once.
Player | Weekly wage | Goals in 2024/25 | Assists in 2024/25 | Cost per goal contributuion |
---|---|---|---|---|
Brennan Johnson | £70k | 6 | 0 | £116k |
Dominic Solanke | £90k | 3 | 2 | £180k |
Dejan Kulusevski | £110k | 2 | 2 | £275k |
James Maddison | £170k | 2 | 4 | £283k |
Heung-min Son | £190k | 3 | 2 | £380k |
Richarlison | £90k | 1 | 0 | £900k |
When working things out this way, Heung-min Son actually becomes the most costly of the Spurs attackers. That’s not to say he’s not contributing, though, it’s more a case of his wages being so high.
