Report: Yankees See Mets as Threat to Sign Soto

0

We didn’t get a Subway Series, but New York’s baseball teams may soon be battling it out for Juan Soto, a Yankees executive told Jon Heyman of the New York Post in an article published Friday.

The message?: “Going from the Yankees to the Mets … that’s a buzzkill.”

The timing of the statement is a bit curious with the Yankees opening the World Series on Friday, but maybe that shows how concerned the team is about losing this offseason’s biggest free-agent prize.

Mets president of baseball operations David Stearns may have gotten the Yankees’ attention on Wednesday when he addressed the media about free agency.

“Pretty much the entirety of the player universe is potentially accessible to us,” Stearns said while discussing the team’s offseason plans at a season-ending news conference.

The unnamed Yankees executive told the Post that the club will point out to Soto the advantage of being a left-handed hitter in their stadium and of having Aaron Judge hitting behind him in the order.

Rival executives told the Post they see the Yankees as the favorite to re-sign Soto, with the Mets behind them. The Dodgers, Giants, and Blue Jays were teams mentioned that may also get involved.

Soto, 26, slashed .288/.419/.569 with 41 home runs and 109 RBIs this year. He is 12-for-36 (.333/.457/.639) with three home runs and eight RBIs in the playoffs.
