Las Torres

0

Las Torres is a minimalist home located in Barcelona, Spain, designed by gr-os. The first step of the project involved examining archival materials and conducting selective demolitions to understand the building’s initial layout. This process uncovered a hidden vault, sealed doors, and four different types of floor slabs, each marking a distinct period of modification over the years. These findings helped clarify the home’s complex history. Designed by August Font Carreras, the estate originally featured an eclectic style, lacking the experimental elements of Art Nouveau. The facade, which is listed, has been restored with care, maintaining its historical integrity.

A thin steel pergola has been added, subtly emerging from the surrounding bougainvillea, enhancing the connection between indoor and outdoor spaces. The new design introduces modern services while respecting the main structural features, including the original vaults and coffered ceilings. A double circulation route between rooms adds fluidity to the layout, ensuring a cohesive flow throughout the home. The interior design choices—checkerboard floors, dark walnut-paneled walls, white marble, and custom-built furniture—draw inspiration from the client’s childhood memories of a modern house designed by Correa & Milá within the same estate.

The renovation also rethinks the traditional relationship between service areas and family living spaces, integrating these more equitably into the overall layout. This adjustment aligns with contemporary values while preserving the historical context of the home. The attic, once a dark and isolated space reserved for servants and accessible only by a narrow spiral staircase from the kitchen, has been transformed. It now connects to the main living areas via a sleek steel staircase, creating a dramatic double-height space. An elevator has also been installed in place of the old service staircase to enhance accessibility.
