From a relative unknown to one of the best in the business

While Van de Ven had enjoyed an outstanding campaign in the Bundesliga before Spurs picked him up, he was still an unknown to most Premier League fans when he arrived.

The Dutchman’s reputation has soared over the last 15 months and he is now widely considered one of the best central defenders in the division.

In fact, it can even be argued that the 23-year-old is Tottenham’s most important player, with his electric pace and ability on the ball being crucial to how Ange Postecoglou’s men play.

Micky van de Ven unsurprised by his success

Van de Ven has now insisted that he is not surprised by how well things have gone for him since his switch to North London.

He explained that he always knew he had it in him to succeed at the highest level, which is why he gave the green light to the move when Tottenham came calling.

The defender told De Telegraaf: “The last year has been incredibly fast. Of course, you know your own qualities, but it is always a question of how you are going to do at the highest level, on the highest podium. So far, that has been going very well at Spurs. From Wolfsburg to Tottenham is a big step.

“It is working out very well.  I also made the steps to Wolfsburg and Tottenham because I thought I could handle the level. That is why it does not surprise me that it is going so well.  If you know your own qualities, you do not make such a step if you cannot handle it.”

Van de Ven learning from international teammates

While things are going splendidly for Van de Ven at Tottenham, he is yet to really find his feet in the Netherlands national side.

He has mostly been used as a left-back by Ronald Koeman rather than in his preferred position but the Spurs star confessed that he is learning a lot from the experienced defenders in the national team set-up.

He added: “I have really grown as a player through the European Championships. You gain a lot of experience during such a final tournament. The boys also help you all the time. It is the little things that you take with you, for example in the coaching.

“I have also spoken a lot with Daley Blind, who has helped me with several things.  But you also look at how Virgil does on the field.  Those are all things that you can take with you.”
