Gabe Vincent says JJ Redick has been ‘great communicator’ for Lakers
Add Gabe Vincent to the list of Lakers players who has had fond words about Lakers head coach JJ Redick and his coaching style.
After a first year riddled with injuries, Gabe Vincent is finally healthy and participated in five of the six Lakers preseason games during their exhibition schedule. With a full training camp under his belt, Vincent now has more insight than fans at home on how things are going under Lakers coach JJ Redick.
After the team’s preseason matchup against the Phoenix Suns, he discussed how Redick can criticize and address issues with the team without berating his players.
“Overall, I think JJ has been a great communicator, first and foremost,” Vincent said. “Whether he’s raised his voice a tad, it never felt like we were being scolded, if that makes sense. It just seems more like he needed to address something that was serious, he addressed it, we took the message and applied it in the next half. He’s done a great job of communicating to the guys and getting his message across very clearly.”
Another thing that’s clear so far this preseason is the kinship between Vincent and Redick. After the Lakers coach got his first win, Vincent ensured he got the game ball.
It’s fair to be skeptical about everyone loving Redick so far, but when multiple players on different days are all saying the same thing, there’s got to be some truth to it.
Redick hasn’t just been a great communicator with his players. He’s communicated well with the media, sharing more intel than previous coaches on where he currently sees things.
We know Redick’s starting lineup and understand he wants a nine-man rotation currently featuring LeBron James, Anthony Davis, D’Angelo Russell, Austin Reaves, Rui Hachimura, Max Christie, Jaxson Hayes, Dalton Knecht and Vincent.
It was refreshing to hear of good vibes during preseason and Redick joke about being a basketball sicko, but with training camp and preseason over and done with, now is the time for that communication to become execution on the hardwood.
The Lakers begin regular season action on Oct. 22 at home against the Minnesota Timberwolves, last season’s Western Conference Finalists. That should be a good test for where this team currently stands early on against the NBA’s best.
