Palmeira Apartment is a minimal apartment located in Lisbon, Portugal, designed by Studio Gameiro. The renovation sought to balance traditional elements with modern design, focusing on craftsmanship that respects the past yet pushes boundaries. The transformation involved meticulous planning, where inspiration was drawn from the home’s original features, reinterpreted for modern living. Throughout the process, the design team worked closely with skilled artisans to create bespoke pieces that fit naturally within the space, as if they had always been there. A key goal of the project was to curate a space that felt immediately like home. Special attention was given to maintaining the property’s original features while integrating the eclectic essence of the surrounding neighborhood.

The home’s layout, mirroring the area’s unstructured geography, lends each room its own unique identity, with the garden adding to the property’s warmth and depth. The master bedroom features a custom-made hand-carved wooden bedframe, reflecting the craftsmanship that runs throughout the house. The renovation erased the divide between old and new, blending the two into a cohesive living experience that is both elegant and comfortable. One of the client’s primary requests was for the kitchen to serve as a functional yet social space. The design achieves this by incorporating a range of materials that work together harmoniously.

Neutral tones dominate the upper cabinets, allowing the focus to shift to the lower oak cabinets and granite countertops. The granite, sourced from Canada, features a natural pattern that adds a sense of dynamism to the space. The backsplash, with its wave-like cut, evokes a sense of movement and conversation—an intentional design element meant to reflect the social nature of the kitchen. Outside, the renovation involved replacing past repair work with eco-friendly materials like lime-based plaster, which allowed the walls to breathe. This careful attention to detail not only restored the home’s original character but also improved the quality of the interior air.
