WNBA Champ Breanna Stewart Gets Misty-Eyed Talking About the Importance of Daughter Ruby Seeing Her Historic Win
WNBA star Breanna Stewart celebrated her historic championship win on Oct. 20 with wife Marta Xargay Casademont and their kids, 3-year-old daughter Ruby and 11-month-old son Theo. The New York Liberty forward led the team to its first WNBA title on Sunday night, with a 67-62 overtime win against the Minnesota Lynx in the fifth game of the WNBA Finals. Afterward, she got misty-eyed with her daughter in her arms as she reflected on having her kids in the crowd.
“This is my first championship with my kids, and my family, so it’s incredible for them to see this,” Stewart said in a post-game interview on ESPN, per the Women Hooping YouTube Channel. Her daughter was hanging out in her arms with a black t-shirt and black bow in her hair to show team spirit, as her mom seemingly held back tears in the interview.
“And for [my kids] to grow up and know that they can be like this one day,” she added, before kissing her daughter on the head. How sweet is that? What an incredible, life-changing experience for those two little ones, and we can’t help but tear up too.
She was also photographed with Casademont and their son Theo, who was all smiles as he looked at his reflection in the championship trophy. The whole family looks so proud of Stewart, who locked in a win for the team after scoring 13 points in the game and landing a pair of free throws in the extra session.
“I was going through a similar situation in what happened in Game 1 and I missed and making sure that didn’t happen,” Stewart said while appearing on TODAY with Hoda & Jenna on Oct. 21 with teammates Sabrina Ionescu, Leonie Fiebich, Ivana Dojkić, Kayla Thornton and Nyara Sabally.
This is Stewart’s third championship. She previously led the Seattle Storm to two championship games before joining Liberty, and she holds two WNBA MVP titles and two WNBA Finals MVP recognitions.
“I was just doing my routine and thinking about making one. Make one and then you make the next one and knowing my teammates had my back the entire time,” she said, adding that their win is “just an incredible feeling.”
“We finally did it. We worked so hard to be at this point and to celebrate in Brooklyn, in Barclays, it was insane,” Stewart said.
