Matt Eberflus Had A Chance To Deny Recent Trade Rumors. He Passed

0

The Chicago Bears have been the subject of several trade rumors over the past week as the November 5th deadline approaches. Three names have been mentioned on more than one occasion: running back Khalil Herbert, defensive end Dominique Robinson, and guard Nate Davis. Minnesota tried to snag Herbert last week, but GM Ryan Poles’ price was too high. Robinson and Davis are viewed as possible depth options. Head coach Matt Eberflus was asked about this at his latest press conference on Monday.

This would’ve been a perfect opportunity for him to downplay the possibility. No sense in getting people’s hopes up, right? Well, Eberflus didn’t do that.

Remember, the Bears head coach is always in the loop on these things. He knows perfectly well what Poles may or may not have planned. The fact he didn’t outright deny the rumors was the first notable part. Then there was the mention that the team might be “potentially” looking at bringing in somebody from elsewhere. In NFL talk, that is a glaring indication the Bears are active.

Matt Eberflus likely senses the moment like everybody else.

His team is 4-2. They’re playing the best football of his tenure as head coach. The defense is as good as it was last season and the offense has ascended under the guidance of new offensive coordinator Shane Waldron and quarterback Caleb Williams. However, the Bears appear trapped in the toughest division in the league. Minnesota (5-1), Detroit (5-1), and Green Bay (5-2) all rank atop the NFC. Chicago will have to face down that gauntlet starting next month. They need all the help they can get.

If they can acquire another impact player, they should at least explore it. Matt Eberflus watched Poles work magic last year by snagging Montez Sweat with a 2nd round pick. Maybe the Bears GM can do it again, maybe for another pass rusher or a potential upgrade along the offensive line. Whatever the case, there is no sense taking the foot off the gas now. This team is on the cusp of something special. One more push could put them in the postseason conversation.
