Meet young Indian cricketer who is leading run-scorer in Ranji Trophy season, father is famous Bollywood producer, his films have earned over Rs 10000000000…
Agni Dev Chopra is in no mood to slow down. The young Mizoram batter is desperate to carve a niche of his own, away from his much-acclaimed father.
The 25-year-old batter’s father is none other than famous Bollywood producer and filmmaker Vidhu Vinod Chopra, who recently made the blockbuster ‘12th Fail’ starring Vikrant Massey. Agni Dev’s mother also is one of the most famous and well-respected film critics in this country – Anupama Chopra.
Vidhu Vinod Chopra’s movies have grossed over Rs 1,000 crore in the box office over the years with movies like Munnabhai MBBS, Lage Raho Munnabhai, 3 Idiots, PK and Sanju. But it’s his son Agni Dev, who is smashing the records especially in the Ranji Trophy Plate Group.
Earlier this year, Agni Dev had become the first-ever Indian batter to score centuries in first four first-class matches after making his debut in the Plate Group with Mizoram. In just 8 matches, Agni has over 1,300 runs at a Sir Donald Bradman-type average of over 91.
He had racked up scores of 105, 101, 114, 10, 164, 15, 166 and 92 in his first four Ranji games to average a whopping 95.87, that too with a strike rate of 111.80. Agni Dev had decided to shift base from Mumbai to Mizoram on the suggestion of his coach Khushpreet Singh.
“Coming here in Mizoram, everyone has been very welcoming and really included me and there are two more pros – KC bhai (KC Cariappa) and Mohit Jangra. They are inclusive and welcoming and I never felt like an outsider. I have been taught a few Mizo words and phrases and I don’t feel in a vastly different place,” Agni Dev had said earlier this year.
Agni Dev has carried on from his 2023-24 season fireworks for Mizoram, smashing 1 double hundred, 1 century and 1 fifty in his first 4 innings of the Ranji Trophy Plate Group season. He is the leading run-scorer in Ranji Trophy with 428 runs in 2 matches with a best of 238 not out.
It has prompted his mom, Anupam Chopra, to tweet, “#ProudMom”.

In his maiden first-class knock, Agni Dev had hammered 166 off 179 balls against Sikkim. In the innings, no other batsman scored more than 20 runs and Mizoram were bowled out for 214 in the Ranji Trophy’s Plate Group match. He also debuted in Syed Mushtaq Ali T20 Trophy earlier this season and was the only batter from Mizoram to score more than 200 runs in it. In seven games, the left-hander struck out 234 runs at a strike-rate of 150.96 with two fifties.
Agni Dev Chopra and Sachin Tendulkar’s son Arjun Tendulkar grew up together playing Mumbai junior cricket. Both Agni Dev and Arjun Tendulkar have moved to Mizoram and Goa respectively to get more match-time in first-class cricket.
