The Metro train network has expanded at a rapid pace , with more than 700 km of new Metro lines becoming operational across 21 cities over the past decade, bringing the total length of India’s metro rail network to 945 km. Apart from the already strong Metro network, over 1000 km of new lines are currently under construction, which once built, will make India’s metro rail network, one of the largest in the world.
When it comes to Metro train networks, the Delhi Metro is undoubtedly a trailblazer, boasting high-tech trainsets and large network that connects almost every nook and corner in the Delhi-NCR region. However, there is a new player in town– Meerut Metro- billed as the fastest metro in the country, and boasting state-of-the-art trains.
So, is the much-anticipated Meerut Metro ‘better’ than the hugely-successful Delhi Metro? Here’s a brief comparison of the two urban transit systems.
Meerut Metro vs Delhi Metro: Total length, network
Delhi Metro boasts the largest Metro network in the country, spanning 393 km, while Meerut Metro, for now, covers a 23 km stretch with 13 stations from Meerut South Station to Modipuram, comprising 18 km of elevated and 5 km of underground sections.
In comparison, Delhi Metro is spread over 393 km with 12 corridors and 288 stations. The Delhi Metro has 10-color-coded lines — with Pink Line being the longest at 57.49 km with 38 stations, while the Green Line covering 24 stations, is the shortest, measuring 27.96 km. The Delhi Metro’s Red Line measures 33.48 km with 29 stations, while Yellow and the Blue Lines, two of the busiest, span 47.25 km with 37 stations, and 55.56 km with 50 stations, respectively.
Similarly, the Violet Line measures 45 km covering 34 stations.
Meerut Metro vs Delhi Metro: Top speed
Meerut Metro is billed as the fastest in the country, and will operate at an average speed of 120 kmph, and a maximum operational speed speed of 135 kmph. The Delhi Metro is comparatively slower, with a maximum speed of 80 kmph, apart for the Airport Express Line (AEL), which has a top speed of 120 kmph.
Delhi Metro’s regular lines operate at an average speed of 40 kmph.
Meerut Metro vs Delhi Metro: Key features
Both Delhi Metro and Meerut Metro boast highly advanced features offering security and comfort to passengers, however, the Meerut Metro is comparatively more spacious and comfortable, featuring padded seats, which are missing in the Delhi Metro.
On the other hand, Delhi Metro has introduced driverless trains on the Magenta Line, a feature not currently available with Meerut Metro.
Meerut Metro vs Delhi Metro: Coach configuration
The Delhi Metro has several types of coach configurations, including eight-car and six-car trains, while the Meerut Metro will have three-car trainsets.
The Delhi Metro, which is operated by the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC), has been in service for well over a decade and has introduced several commuter-friendly features over its operational period, making it the transit of choice for people residing in Delhi-NCR.
Meanwhile, the Meerut Metro, which will be run by by the National Capital Region Transport Corporation (NCRTC), will begin commercial operations next year and announced expansion plans.
