Dubai, the shopping capital of the world, is known for its towering skyscrapers, luxurious lifestyle and mind-boggling wealth. However, beyond all of its razzle and dazzle, the majestic gulf city is run under strict laws which are sternly imposed by its law enforcement agencies.

Dubai’s laws are some of the strictest in the world in several matters such as traffic. In India, people are challaned and fined for violating traffic rules such as driving the wrong lane or over speeding, while in Dubai, pedestrians are issued hefty fined for jaywalking and ignoring traffic laws.

According to a report, Dubai Police have fined 37 people a hefty sum of 400 UAE Dirhams (roughly Rs 9,150) for ignoring traffic signals and crossing the road in a dangerous manner.

As per Dubai’s traffic laws, pedestrians can invite a fine of 400 UAE dirhams for crossing the road at places where Zebra Crossing are not marked or ignoring traffic signals when crossing, Gulf News reported.

Dubai has strict laws against jaywalking, which essentially means the act of crossing a street without following traffic regulations, such as crossing in the middle of the block or against a red light. Unlike many countries, where jaywalking invites a mere slap-on-the-wrist, Dubai imposes heavy fines on jaywalkers to deter future violations.

8 dead in jaywalking incidents, 44,000 fined

According to the Dubai Police, as many as eight people were killed and 339 injured in jaywalking incidents in 2023, The police regularly warn people about the dangers of jaywalking and how it could prove fatal.

As per Gulf News, over 44,000 people were fined for jaywalking in 2023. A local resident was fined 200o UAE Dirhams for violating traffic rules, while pedestrians, mostly south Asians, were slapped with a 400 Dirham fine for jaywalking, the report said.

Dubai considers jaywalking a serious offence and serial offenders can also attract a jail term, besides a hefty fine.
