Elon Musk, the founder of Tesla and the world’s richest man, has made a startling revelation, claiming that his company, SpaceX, was once forced to kidnap seals and conduct bizarre experiments on them to assess the impact of environment on rocket launches. Musk, a self-professed futurist, known for his outlandish conspiracy theories, claimed in a recent interview that SpaceX was forced to “kidnap a seal, strap it to a board, put headphones on the seal, and play sonic boom sounds to it”.

Speaking on the Lex Fridman Podcast, Elon Musk claimed the experiment was conducted to gauge the impact of sonic booms caused by rocket launches on local seal populations near the Vandenberg Space Force Base in California. The SpaceX CEO claimed that the bizarre experiment was aimed to assess the effect of sonic booms from rocket launches on seal procreation near the Vandenberg Base.

“SpaceX was forced by the government to kidnap seals, put earphones on them and play sonic boom sounds to see if they seemed upset,” the Tesla CEO said in a post on X.

Expressing his bewilderment at the scenario, Musk asserted the requirement was absurd as historical evidence suggest rocket launches do not impact seal populations in any negative manner. “The sonic booms might even be an aphrodisiac for seals,” he quipped.

The billionaire, known for his quirky takes, said the seal was surprisingly calm while being strapped to a board with headphones playing sonic booms. Musk also also claimed to have photographic evidence of the alleged experiment which was reportedly conducted on two separate occasions on two different seals

While yet unsubstantiated, the unusual experiment revealed by Elon Musk showcases the complexity of regulations space companies must comply with.

Musk’s bizarre tale has triggered discussions in the space industry about the need to maintain a balance between protecting the environment and advancing space exploration efforts in the near-future with some experts noting that such extreme measures are not required as historical evidence proves space launches do not harm local fauna.
