BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) – A 79-year-old woman was killed after being struck by a United States Postal Service delivery vehicle while crossing Main Street in East Aurora on Sunday, according to police.

The woman was taken to ECMC by Mercy Flight and died at the hospital, East Aurora police said. She was identified as Mary E. Kerwin of East Aurora.

Police said Kerwin was crossing Main Street at Olean Street at 10:02 a.m. Sunday when the USPS vehicle turned right from Olean Street and struck her. A video canvass of the area has not shown any footage of the crash, according to East Aurora Police Chief Patrick Welch.

Welch believes the truck was moving at a slow speed.

"It's early in the investigation, however, we're led to believe based on witnesses that were there that did see it happen and the operator of the postal service vehicle that this situation looks to be just really just a terrible accident," Welch said.

No charges have yet been announced against the driver, who cooperated with police at the scene. The incident remains under investigation.

"The U.S. Postal Service and its employees are deeply saddened by the loss of a member of the East Aurora community. We extend our heartfelt condolences to the family," USPS said in a statement. "Safety is of paramount importance to the Postal Service, and we are investigating."
