Arches Provincial Park, Newfoundland

While traveling the highways and byways of the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador there are many hidden gems to seek out, you just need to know where to look. One such place is Arches Provincial Park along the central west coast, just north of the Gros Morne National Park boundary. This area is considered the Northern Peninsula, along Route 430 (Viking Trail). This small highway park, which opened in 1972, is well worth the stop to view the impressive archways that have been carved out of the grass covered stack along the rocky beach (top photo).

Initially carved by glaciers, over thousands of years the constant erosion of wind and waves has taken their toll on this limestone stack. Originally, caves were worn into its side, with fracturing undermining this platform and eventually forming four archways. One of the arches has since collapsed, leaving the three arches seen today (bottom photo).  Because of its photographic opportunities and proximity to the highway, Arches is a popular tourist spot and also a nice place to stretch your legs a bit on the beach.
