Crafted with precision and steeped in historical symbolism, Thewall#06 and Thewall#07, designed by Sing Chan, are more than just furniture pieces but narratives in stainless steel. Introduced in 2022 and 2023, the tables are fresh entries in the evocative Chinese Architecture Memory series. Strong-shaped and innovatory assembly reverberates with the duality of China’s historic borders that both divide and connect civilizations.

These works represent a series of tables that find their direct inspiration in the monumental architecture of the borders of China. Borders, considered through the lens of history, represent the sites of conflict and confluence; diverse cultures come and go, so to speak, like the walls separating and defining them. The Thewall series frames this ambiguity through its modularism, since each of its sections can be freely placed, allowing it to be a table, a wall, a bridge, or an area of assembly, depending on how it is configured.

It is made of stainless steel with careful electroplating so that each table can be outstanding visually and physically endurable to symbolize the walls’ lasting legacy that shaped much of history in China. Whereas the Thewall #06 is a warm, inviting glow in brass, the Thewall #07 is a stark, compelling contrast in black, each finish reflecting different aspects of historical fortifications: gold for warmth and prosperity, gray for the somber shadows of separation.

These have been designed to be more than mere furniture pieces but interactive pieces of history, encouraging users to configure their segments in any manner similar to the world’s territories once were and still can be contended over and their boundaries redrawn. This interactive aspect introduces each assembly as a personal reflection of the owner’s vision of division or unity into an otherwise very static entity in nature: traditional furniture.

Originating from a series that began in 2020, the Thewall collection continues the thread of modern design, exploring and reimagining architectural memory. Each piece in the series is not only a nod to the past but also a reinterpretation for the contemporary space, and these tables are both a focal point and a conversation starter. Thewall#06 in brass and Thewall#07 in black make quite a statement by merging historical reverence with minimalist aesthetics in an architectural way that challenges and redefines the bounds of design and function. Each table functions as a testament to design about the strength of bridging the past into the present, much like the walls that have divided and defined the course of history.
