‘No road-widening works on Akamas scenic route’
Maintenance works being carried out on the road from Aphrodite’s Baths to Fontana Amorosa in Akamas are in no case works to upgrade or widen the scenic route, the environment and forestry departments said on Saturday.
The two departments said the planned works were discussed at a meeting on July 1 with the participation of the Friends of Akamas, among others.
The works, being carried out at three points of the road, are of a combined length of 500 metres.
The departments said the terms and conditions of the project were available online on the environment department’s website.
According to the two departments, the maintenance works are to make the road safer for visitors and accessible to emergency vehicles, such as fire engines.
Such works have been carried out for years, however this was the first time a special ecological assessment was issued, in line with the political commitment for all works in Akamas to have the least possible environmental impact.
Works began on October 14 and are expected to be completed by October 25.
These road works are unrelated to the road-widening works in another area of Akamas, for which state officials are being investigated regarding possible disciplinary offences.
