Good Morning America’s Sam Champion Opens up About Skin Cancer Diagnosis

0

Beloved ABC weatherman Sam Champion recently shocked viewers when he shared he was diagnosed with skin cancer live on air.

With the Good Morning America crew by his side, Champion opened up about his journey and the important message he has for people at risk.

"There have been so many advancements in sun protection, sunscreen, and laser treatments for pre-cancerous areas," he began. "So I hope that one day no one has to go through surgery to get rid of skin cancer, but, right now, we have to keep our eye on our skin, our hands on our skin, be very vigilant, and notice any unusual spots, and if those spots start to change, immediately get care.”

The interview continued as Champion walked his viewers through the steps he's taking to protect himself and his skin from the sun.

"When I'm not bringing you the weather, I love nothing more than being outside. But these days I wouldn't think of going outside without sunscreen," he says recalling the countless times over the years he remembers having blistering sunburns.

This isn't the first time he's encountered the deadly disease either. But with a diagnosis of nodular carcinoma under his right eye that was larger and deeper than expected, this time it was more serious.

"While I can't go back in time, these days we know more and I don't leave my house without sunscreen," Champion said.

"The scar is not the problem, the skin cancer's the problem, so we got rid of that. The next phase of my journey will be scar care, and trust me there's a lot of advancement in that."
