Rats in IIT Roorkee Mess: IITs are among the most prestigious institutes in India and students from across the country clear tough competitive exams to take admission to them. The government also provides additional facilities to these institutions so that students can complete their studies with ease. However, a recent controversy erupted at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Roorkee in Uttarakhand, where students spotted rats in their mess – Radha-Krishna Bhawan. Some students recorded the incident on their smartphones and claimed that they found rats in frying pans and other kitchen utensils used to prepare their food.

The bizarre incident came to light on Thursday when students were having lunch at the mess. Some of the students, out of curiosity went inside the kitchen to have a glimpse of it, where they found rats roaming on kitchen utensils.

Surprised after seeing the miserable condition of the kitchen area, students started alleging that they were being fed rat-contaminated food, India Today reported citing sources.

They gathered outside the mess and started demanding action against people responsible for the miserable condition of the mess.

The students put forward their concerns, articulating that despite being famed as a highly regarded establishment, IIT-Roorkee does not live up to expectations when it comes to cleanliness and hygiene. They raised the grave issue of prospective health hazards linked to the food dished up in the mess, underscoring the current problem. To add more, they further voiced their disappointment by raising catchy lines of outcry against the institution.

IIT-Roorkee Administration Responded

The management at IIT-Roorkee has confirmed sightings of rats in the Radha-Krishna Bhawan dining hall. In response, they have started looking into the issue.

“Immediate investigation has been started, and corrective action is being taken to ensure compliance with hygiene standards. The health and safety of the students remains the top priority. External special experts have been engaged to assess the situation and prevent such incidents in future”, Sonika Shrivastava, IIT-Roorkee’s media in-charge said.
