Eastmoor Academy celebrates 'Archie Griffin Day,' honors two-time Heisman winner

COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) -- An Ohio State legend returned to his roots under the Friday Night Lights at Eastmoor Academy.

Archie Griffin, the only two-time Heisman Trophy winner, was back at Eastmoor on Friday, where he was a three-sport athlete before his prolific football career with the Buckeyes. Columbus City Schools celebrated the 50th anniversary of his first Heisman, and he said the high school memories started flooding back.

"When you think back, it's been a long time. About 53 years ago since I played my last game on this field," he said.

Griffin said he still remembers playing in the City League championship on the same field.

"It was the first time the city had a north-south championship game," he said. "It was against Linden-McKinley, and to be able to play that game, the first City League championship game against Linden-McKinley, was pretty special. And we played that on this field."

Columbus City Schools declared Oct. 18 as "Archie Griffin Day."
