Squirrel Cook-Off, bike and Jeep ride to benefit injured motorcyclist
ST. LANDRY PARISH, La. (KLFY) -- At Willie's Campground in Washington, the Gumbo Foundation is putting together a benefit to support Larry Manuel, who is facing big challenges after a motorcycle accident earlier this year.
In March, Manuel was riding his motorcycle when he was hit by a truck.
The accident resulted in a devastating injury that caused Manuel to have his leg amputated. He also suffered a broken hip and damage to his eye socket.
In the months since the accident, Manuel has undergone extensive rehabilitation and started using a prosthetic leg.
As expenses continue to build up, Manuel's friend Sally Reed said she was contacted by the Gumbo Foundation to organize a benefit with all proceeds going towards Manuel's recovery.
"There's going to be a Squirrel Cook-Off Live and silent auction. Three bands playing during the day. We got a bike and Jeep run," Reed said.
The bike and jeep run will be at 9 a.m. Registration for that is at 7:30 a.m.
With the price at $20 per rider in the bike and jeep run and $10 a passenger, Reed said the money raised will make a huge difference in Manuel's life as he adjusts to his challenges.
Reed said the feeling of community gathering around Manuel can only be described as heartwarming.
"It warms my heart so much to see the people that care about, but I think that's why bikers are such a close-knit group. When we ride, we also look out for each other. He can't believe it. He said he's never seen people to come together like this before. We have a few surprises for him, too, I would tell you, but he may see this. So, it's going to be a sight to see," Reed said.
The benefit will be taking place at Willie's Campground in Washington on Oct. 19. with opening ceremonies beginning at 10 a.m.
