'Not something normal': Woman speaks after father shot outside Islamic School of Portland

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) -- A woman is speaking up after her father was shot in a parking lot just behind the Islamic School of Portland, prompting a large police response Thursday afternoon.

Portland police say the suspect, identified as 42-year-old Noureddine Dib, went into the school following the shooting. He later came out, before being taken into custody without incident.

Amineh Zakarneh, the daughter of the man who was shot, headed over to the school after her younger brother called her to say their dad hadn't picked them up.

"My brother called me, he says, 'Dad's car is there, but I don't see him' and immediately I knew something was wrong. And, I remember getting there. The road was blocked off. I couldn't even get to the school and I was freaking out."

But now, she said her father is currently resting at the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Zakarneh additionally noted that, although she hadn't known Dib before the shooting, she'd previously heard of him being hostile towards her father and others.

"The man has demonstrated some aggressive behavior in the past, towards my dad, but then also just generally in the community," she said.

Dib was arraigned in Multnomah County court on charges including second-degree attempted murder, in which he plead not guilty.

"I really just want to emphasize that this is not something normal," Zakarneh stressed. "This is not something that typically happens within our faith community or even faith communities in general. And I really don't want to foster a bad image onto our community."

Zakarneh has also set up a GoFundMe for her father, which you can donate to here.

It's still not clear what led to the shooting. But Portland Police Chief Bob Day released a statement early Thursday evening, stating in part that it wasn't a school shooting and is not considered a bias crime.
