‘Bread and Roses’ sets Apple TV+ premiere date: Jennifer Lawrence-produced documentary captures Afghan women’s fight for autonomy
Apple Original Films has set a global premiere date for the documentary “Bread and Roses” from director Sahra Mani. The movie co-produced by Jennifer Lawrence and Justine Ciarrocchi will stream on Apple TV+ beginning November 22, 2024.
“Bread and Roses” offers a powerful window into the seismic impact on women’s rights and livelihoods after Kabul fell to the Taliban in 2021. The documentary film follows three women, in real time, as they fight to recover their autonomy. Director Sahra Mani captures the spirit and resilience of Afghan women through a raw depiction of their harrowing plight. Watch the trailer below.
The film premiered to critical acclaim at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival, where it was nominated for the Golden Eye documentary prize. Catherine Bray (Variety) wrote the film “tackles an urgent and timely topic through a committed on-the-ground perspective.” Sarah Manvel (In Their Own League) stated, “The courage on display in this documentary is earth-shattering…The immediacy of their experiences after the takeover and the strength of their feeling cuts through the screen like the sharpest of blades.” Matthew Carey (Deadline) noted, “Whether a documentary about women in Afghanistan can effect any change in the country seems too much to hope for. But at the very least, it will help ensure their ordeal is not forgotten.”
“Bread and Roses,” an Eyan Foundation presentation in association with Extracurricular, is produced by Jennifer Lawrence and Justine Ciarrocchi with Sahra Mani, alongside executive producers Malala Yousafzai and Farhad Khosravi.
