New Jeff Davis Parish Sheriff gives 90-day progress report

JEFF DAVIS PARISH, La. (KLFY) -- After over a decade, Jeff Davis Parish has a new sheriff who says his goal to make the parish safer is going according to plan, even quicker than he thought.

It's been a little over three months since Kyle Miers replaced former Jeff Davis Parish Sheriff Ivy Woods. Miers says since he took over, he's been checking off items on his plan of action list.

"I expected to be where we are now, six months or nine months from now," he said.

Miers said being able to show people in Jeff Davis Parish his gratitude for their support and trust in his leadership is one of the reason he's working hard to accomplish his plan.

"I made it a point to start checking that list off because I wanted to show the people that I can be trusted," Miers said.

Miers said things like building increasing deputy patrol, increasing employee retention are just a few things he's been working on. One way he's doing that is the implementation of the Sheriff's Office first-ever physical fitness assessment as a way to boost morale.

"I said when I get sworn in, I want the sheriff's office of Jeff Davis Parish to be a career and not just another job," he said.

Miers said although it's only been three months, he knows he has a long way to go, but he his confident that his faith, the love and support from his community and his experience will allow him to continue accomplishing what he's set out to do.

"When someone calls in and they have a worry of speeders or suspicious activity or something that's just not right in their community, my job is also to make sure that the deputies then react and respond," Miers said.
