PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) -- A shooting which left one man hospitalized prompted a large police response in Southwest Portland early Thursday afternoon.

An arrest was also made in connection to the shooting. Portland police identified the suspect as 42-year-old Beaverton resident Noureddine Dib, who is now accused of attempted murder and other charges.

Just before 2:30 p.m., police and medical crews were dispatched to the 10200 block of Southwest Capitol Highway on reports of a shooting involving two men.

On arrival, they found one of the men had been injured and he was taken to a trauma center for treatment.

Police say the shooting happened in a parking lot just behind the Islamic School of Portland. Although the suspect did enter the building following the shooting, he later came out, and was taken into custody without incident, officials said.

Mike Benner, a PPB spokesperson, said the victim was located by officers in the parking lot of a Shell gas station.

Officers searched the school after the arrest and recovered a firearm from the scene, officials said.

Police say the two men knew each other and are connected to the school and nearby mosque.

Portland Police Chief Bob Day released a statement early Thursday evening, in part clarifying that it wasn't a school shooting and that it isn't considered a bias crime.

"Today a shooting occurred near an Islamic school and mosque between two people who knew one other. To be clear, this shooting was not a school shooting or a bias crime. Events like this one are a testament to the critical need for our strong partnership with the Muslim community. I am grateful to the members of the PPB Muslim Advisory Council for their continued support and direct engagement in community safety and well-being," Day said.

Portland Police Bureau said in a press release that the shooting "happened in a parking lot located at the top of a stairwell behind the school, and not inside the school itself."

Dib was booked into the Multnomah County Detention Center and faces charges that include second-degree attempted murder, first-degree assault, unlawful use of a weapon and unlawful discharge of a firearm.

KOIN 6 News spoke to a young woman who claims to be the daughter of the person who got shot.

"I was definitely scared," said the young woman, who wished to remain anonymous.

She said two of her young siblings were at the school when the suspect allegedly ran inside after multiple shots were fired.

"He's a hard working man. I love him a lot," the young woman said of her father. "And it's incredibly unfortunate that this has to happen, especially within my faith community."

Police said there is no ongoing threat to the community and that the shooting is being investigated as an isolated incident.

The young woman said she is glad no one else got hurt and that she's praying for her community.

"I have faith, and I have faith in God, and I think that's the most important thing," she said.

The incident is currently under investigation.
