Keri Russell Just Remembered Falling for Matthew Rhys on 'The Americans' & We Can’t Get Enough

In Hollywood, they are a few tropes we see over and over again. Among our favorites, of course, are the celebrities co-stars who fall in love on set, like The Americans stars Keri Russell and Matthew Rhys. For those who don’t know, the pair, who starred in the show together from 2013 to 2018, began their love story back in 2013 and have been together ever since.

And, in a new interview with Russell, the actress looked back on their honeymoon phase together. “I was in love with Matthew,” Russell told Variety. “We were, like, hot and heavy in love, shooting the spy stuff at night in disguises and wigs.”

“I mean, it was such a fun, sexy time,” she continued. “So fun, oh my gosh.”

Three years later, in 2016, Rhys and Russell welcomed their son, Samuel, together. Russell is also a mom to her kids River, 17, and Willa, 11, from her marriage to ex-husband Shane Deary.

Also in the interview, Rhys himself shared a few words about his partner, and gushed about her acting chops.

“She always says how limited she is as an actress, which kind of annoys me,” he admitted to the outlet. “I think she has an insecurity that, possibly because she didn’t go to college, she’s limited in acting. But I bang my head against the wall telling her otherwise.” After all, he saw her brilliant work as an actress for years up close!

“It’s rare that she’s enthusiastic about acting,” Rhys then explained of Russell’s career. “I mean, there’s a genuine — it’s not so much a ‘dislike’; that’s too strong a word — it’s a discomfort, I think. She is naturally a very shy person, and to expose herself in that way day after day, I think she finds both taxing and challenging.”

“But she is a mind, and she loves being challenged, and she loves words — books are her biggest passion,” he added. “Words and narrative are her great love.”

From Russell’s own quotes, it seems Rhys really knows her to a tee. “It takes me a lot to get to the point of saying yes,” she said about new acting roles. “And what usually is the unshakable thing that moves me out of the comfort zone is that it’s just a story I can’t stop thinking about.”

Most recently, Russell’s set to star in Netflix’s The Diplomat, where she’ll play Ambassador Kate Wyler. We can’t wait to watch!
