Reactions to the deadly shooting of Afghan migrants by Iranian border forces

0

The recent shooting of migrants by Iranian border forces has sparked widespread reactions. In a recent statement, Australian Senator Claire Chandler described the Iranian regime as “murderous and savage,” criticizing Western officials for their conservative stance toward Tehran.

She referenced the reported massacre of Afghan migrants at the Iran-Pakistan border, asserting on the social media platform X that the Iranian regime will not undergo any reform.

Zalmay Khalilzad, the former U.S. envoy for peace in Afghanistan, also responded to the shooting incident involving Iranian border forces targeting Afghan migrants. He stated, “If the reports are accurate, this would be horrifying and warrants consequences.” Khalilzad emphasized the need to await the results of credible investigations before making any judgments, despite the Iranian government denying the occurrence of such a deadly event.

Previously, the human rights organization “Halvash,” which focuses on issues in Sistan and Baluchestan and the rights of ethnic and religious minorities in Iran, reported accounts from migrants regarding the deadly shooting by Iranian border forces. According to their report, on the evening of October 13, Iranian border guards opened fire on Afghan migrants attempting to enter Iran at night, resulting in approximately 260 fatalities. This shocking figure has yet to be confirmed by any independent media or organization, and the Iranian government has denied that such an event took place.

Richard Bennett, the UN Special Rapporteur on human rights in Afghanistan, has stressed the need for an immediate investigation into the incident. The Permanent Mission of Afghanistan to the UN condemned the shooting of Afghan migrants by Iranian border guards, calling for a thorough investigation of the event.

The mission stated that they had received reports of hundreds of Afghan migrants being killed by Iranian border forces.

In its initial response to the news, the Taliban announced that it would utilize all its resources to investigate the matter thoroughly.

The situation surrounding the shooting of Afghan migrants by Iranian border forces has generated significant international concern. Calls for investigation and accountability highlight the urgent need for transparency and justice in addressing human rights violations.
