Rohit Sharma needs just three victories to break Virat Kohli’s THIS record in World Test Championship

New Delhi: India skipper Rohit Sharma has a chance to surpass former captain Virat Kohli’s record in the World Test Championship with three wins in the upcoming home series against New Zealand. Considering India’s strong track record in home Tests, Rohit is well-placed to exceed his predecessor’s achievements in the upcoming three-match series.

Rohit Sharma impressed with his leadership during the Test series against Bangladesh last month, though he struggled to make a significant impact with the bat. He is now just three wins away from becoming the most successful Indian captain in the World Test Championship, surpassing Virat Kohli’s record.

The three-match Test series is set to begin on October 16 in Bengaluru, a venue that holds special significance for Virat Kohli. Interestingly, Rohit Sharma has only played one Test match at this stadium, which was against Sri Lanka in March 2022.

During his tenure as skipper in the World Test Championship, Virat Kohli led India in 22 Tests, achieving 14 victories and suffering seven losses, with one match ending in a draw. He concluded his captaincy with an impressive win percentage of 63.63 in the tournament.

In contrast, Rohit Sharma has captained India in 18 Tests, securing 12 victories and facing four losses, with two matches ending in a draw. His win percentage stands at an impressive 66.66, surpassing Kohli’s. If Rohit achieves three wins against New Zealand, he will elevate his record to 15 victories in 21 Tests.

Should India achieve a 3-0 whitewash against New Zealand in the series, Rohit Sharma will surpass former captain Sourav Ganguly, becoming the fourth-most successful Indian captain in Test history. MS Dhoni tops the list, followed by Virat Kohli, Mohammed Azharuddin, and then Ganguly, who concluded his captaincy with 97 victories from 196 matches.

Rohit Sharma first captained India in the World Test Championship in March 2022 against Sri Lanka in Mohali, a match that also marked Virat Kohli’s 100th Test appearance.
