Two dead following Saturday crash in Clay Co.

CLAY CENTER (KSNT) - A 72-year-old man and a 79-year-old woman died in a Clay County crash on Saturday, a crash that left three others seriously injured.

At 3:55 p.m. an 18-year-old man from Clay Center was driving a 2001 Ford Ranger east on U24. A 47-year-old man was driving a 2004 Toyota Sienna west on U24. For an unknown reason, the 18-year-old crossed the center line entering the westbound lane. The two vehicles hit head-on, according to the Kansas Highway Patrol Crash (KHP) log.

There were four passengers in the Toyota Sienna. 72-year-old Robert M. McCollum and 79-year-old Alma J. Wright both died in the crash; their next of kin was notified. The two other occupants, an 80-year-old man from Gardner and a 55-year-old woman from Gardner were also seriously injured, according to the KHP.

The 18-year-old driver was also taken to an area hospital for treatment of serious injuries, according to the crash log.

The KHP reported that neither Wright nor McCollum were wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash.
