Columbus Day, Indigenous Peoples' Day in NYC: What’s closed

0

NEW YORK CITY (PIX11) – Many New York City institutions will shut for Columbus Day and Indigenous Peoples' Day, which will give students a three-day weekend.

The Department of Sanitation will not collect trash, composting, or recycling during the holiday. It’s a bank holiday in the U.S., but the stock market will remain open.

Alternate side parking will be suspended for the holiday. The MTA's website does not show any broad schedule changes to New York City’s subways on Monday.

President Joe Biden declared Indigenous People's Day a federal in 2021, coinciding with Columbus Day, which falls on the second Monday in October. Columbus Day was made a federal holiday in 1937. Monday also marks Italian Heritage Day in New York.

Over the weekend, New York City celebrated the holiday with its annual Columbus Day Parade along Fifth Avenue.

Here’s what will be closed on Columbus Day and Indigenous Peoples' Day in NYC:

  • NYC Public Schools
  • City offices and government buildings
  • DMV
  • Banks
  • Post Offices
  • Courts
  • All New York City public libraries
