Residence Y2

Residence Y2 is a minimal home located in Taipei, Taiwan, designed by CM Design. The house, characterized by its long layout, front and back lighting, and a rear kitchen, had always felt dark and narrow in their memories. To create a brighter, more open space, the design team opted for a complete overhaul, introducing new materials and an experimental approach to transform the townhouse into a modern, functional living space. The original layout of the home restricted light and space, particularly in the rear kitchen and dining area. To address this, the design divided the rear section into three distinct areas: two bathrooms and a downsized kitchen.

The smaller kitchen is now neatly aligned with the walkway, defined only by a door frame and an elevated floor, allowing more light to flow through. The dining area was restructured to widen the walkway, making it multifunctional as both a dining and small living space, maximizing usability. The new design emphasizes openness and fluidity, linking the front and rear of the house with continuous lighting. The shared living area is now defined by an L-shaped flow, providing separation between spaces while maintaining a sense of unity. Instead of a traditional living room with a TV wall, three open walls have been left free to create flexible gathering spots throughout the home.

The space is furnished with lightweight, versatile furniture, enhancing flexibility and minimizing the sense of exclusivity typically associated with a living room. In keeping with the client’s focus on sustainability, eco-friendly materials were incorporated throughout the house. Portable furniture, recycled paper curtains, and renewable materials create an environmentally conscious interior. Recycled Japanese wallpaper in the bedroom serves as a backdrop for a world map, adding texture while capturing the client’s love of travel. The original terrazzo tiles in the entryway were preserved, honoring the home’s history and maintaining a connection to the past.
