The Whitney celebrates choreographer Alvin Ailey with free tickets, raffle

MEATPACKING DISTRICT, Manhattan (PIX11) – Grab a free ticket to the Whitney and check out a celebration of choreographer Alvin Ailey, recently featured in a PBS show.

Admission to the museum on Gansevoort Street is free all day Sunday but still requires registration online. The celebration kicked off with a free outdoor dance class taught by The Ailey School instructor Maguette Camara, teaching museum-goers to move to West African music and drumming.

Museum-goers can learn to dance at a second class outside the museum at 2 p.m. Throughout the afternoon, the museum will play an episode of “Xavier Riddle and the Secret Museum,” an animated PBS show, about Ailey's life and work.

The show’s artist, Chris Eliopoulos, will then teach kids how to draw Ailey in the style of the show. Xavier Riddle will be at the museum, and kids will have a chance to win raffle items based on the cartoon.

Inside the museum, attendees can catch the Whitney’s “Edges of Ailey” exhibit, which opened in September and features live performances.

Every second Sunday of the month is free at the Whitney Museum, but reserved tickets are always required. As every Sunday, storytime will be held at the museum at 11 a.m., 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. for young kids and families.
