Crews fight overnight landfill fire in Niagara County for nearly 11 hours
BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) -- Fire crews fought an overnight landfill fire for nearly 11 hours Saturday on Pletcher Road in Lewiston, Lewiston Fire Company No. 1 announced.
The fire company was dispatched to the blaze at 1445 Pletcher Road, which is believed to be Modern Landfill. Fire officials said they found a large pile of rubber tire chunks burning upon arrival.
Additional crews from Lewiston Fire Company No. 2, Sanborn Fire Company, the Niagara Falls Air Reserve Station, Barker, Terrys Corners and Youngstown were called in to help extinguish the fire.
Fire officials said the firefighters worked from midnight to almost 11 a.m. to fight the blaze. According to authorities, the crews faced several challenges that made fighting the fire more difficult, such as the exposure of a methane pipe, two parked bulldozers that were at risk and 15 mph winds.
No firefighter injuries were reported, but one landfill employee was treated and released, fire officials said.
