Alasdair Gold has named the two areas Spurs might prioritise strengthening in January and his assertion might come as a bit of a surprise for Spurs fans.

Squad in need of strengthening

Ange Postecoglou is already short of options in a couple of areas, namely in attack, in light of the injuries that Tottenham have had to deal with at the start of this season.

That shows that the Lilywhites need to add some reinforcements to their squad if they are to have a realistic shot of competing on multiple fronts this season.

Strengthen in defence

Interestingly, Gold believes that it is at the back that Tottenham are most in need of urgent additions.

The journalist suggested that the North London club need another left-back and a pacy centre-back, adding that it would be ideal if they could sign one player who can cover both positions.

When asked what signings Spurs should prioritise in January, the journalist said on a Q&A on Football.London: “Annoyingly, Spurs still have to be aware of the Europa League squad restrictions, knowing that whoever they bring in, if they want them to play in Europe, then other players will have to be removed from that squad.

Postecoglou could well take that into account but mainly he’ll be thinking about the other three competitions and the need to keep evolving his squad, which should override the European concerns.

“I would say a left-back able to play in the inverted style and another centre-back with a bit of pace are the biggest priorities in my opinion as potential January additions.

“In an ideal world, a player who could fill both roles would only require one person to come out of the Europa League squad if they are to be registered should Spurs get to the knockout stages.”

Two more positions

Apart from the defence, Gold said that Postecoglou could also bring a suitable understudy to Guglielmo Vicario, hinting that Fraser Forster might not be up to the task any longer.

He added: “Beyond that, Vicario needs someone to challenge him going forward and further midfield and attacking options are going to be required to continue the development of the squad.”
