The Maple Leafs down the Penguins

The Penguins lost 4-2 on the road to Toronto on Saturday night. Pittsburgh took a first period lead when Kris Letang found space on the right side of the ice and stepped into a slap shot power play goal.

Pittsburgh was able to hold onto the lead but only for a little while. Toronto responded with two goals in the first 2:53 of the second period to take a lead they would never surrender. William Nylander struck first and then Matthew Knoes beat rookie goalie Joel Blomqvist who was making his second straight start.

Toronto would start strong in the third period with a Mitch Marner goal 2:12 in to claim a 3-1 lead.

Pittsburgh would make it interesting in the third period. Evgeni Malkin carved through the defense on the rush and dished a pass off for Rickard Rakell for his first goal of the season to bring the Pens within one goal.

But the Pens could get no closer and Nylander scored his second goal of the game on an empty net to seal the victory for the Leafs at 4-2.

No in depth thoughts tonight in the quick cap, Sidney Crosby put Marcus Pettersson in a bad spot for Marner to burn by him but it’s been an uancharaterically poor start for Pettersson this year.

Bryan Rust was able to make his season debut tonight after a preseason injury.
