Larnaca exhibition takes place underwater
The exhibition Ocean of Threads: A Fusion of Fashion, Art, and Marine Protection has been installed in the sea in the Oroklini marine protected area. A collaborative effort between artist Michalis Pantelides, the Department of Fisheries and Marine Research and the Larnaca Tourism Board, the exhibition has been on display since mid-September and will remain underwater until the end of the year.
With the aim to go beyond the ordinary parameters of an art exhibition, Ocean of Threads serves “as a powerful statement about the strength of creativity in fostering a passion for ocean protection,” organisers say.
The artist transforms plastic bottles into sustainable fashion items like scarves and dresses, decorated with a collage designed by Pantelides from underwater photographs by Alexandros Papandreou. The designs highlight the underwater beauty of Larnaca and emphasise the importance of marine ecosystems.
The project also aims at raising public awareness about marine biodiversity and the need to protect the underwater ecosystem. “Each piece,” conclude organisers, “serves as a reminder of our interdependence with the marine environment and the significant role we can play in its preservation.”
