UN envoy marks International Day of the girl: 1,120 days since schools closed to girls in Afghanistan
The head of UNAMA, Rosa Otunbayeva, marked International Day of the Girl by highlighting that it has been 1,120 days since the Taliban banned girls from receiving an education.
She emphasized that Afghan girls are suffering more each day, with Afghanistan regressing rather than making progress.
On October 11, International Day of the Girl, Ms. Otunbayeva released a statement underscoring this year’s theme: “Girls’ Visions for the Future.” The statement conveys the urgent need for action and hope for the future.
In her message, Otunbayeva expressed deep sorrow for marking this day, noting that it has been precisely 1,120 days since the ruling authorities prohibited education for girls over twelve years old. This prolonged ban continues to limit opportunities for Afghan girls.
She urged the Taliban to reconsider the restrictions imposed on girls and called for a change in their current path. Otunbayeva reassured Afghan girls and women that she would not hesitate to fight for their rights.
The UN agency has also stressed its commitment to promoting and supporting humanitarian assistance in line with human rights principles, gender equality, inclusive governance, and economic stability in Afghanistan.
Despite the global community’s requests, the Taliban have remained unresponsive to calls for reopening schools and universities to girls over the past three years.
The plight of Afghan women and girls amidst this humanitarian crisis is dire, with escalating poverty leading to increased forced and underaged marriages. These societal pressures further entrench gender inequality, limiting their autonomy and future prospects.
As the international community continues to advocate for the rights of Afghan women and girls, it remains crucial to ensure their voices are heard.
The ongoing restrictions on education and employment not only hinder their personal development but also deprive Afghanistan of its potential contributions to society, emphasizing the urgent need for change.
