Andrew Garfield Explains Why He Never Thought He'd Be Cast as Spider-Man

Andrew Garfield was really convinced that he wasn’t going to be cast as Spider-Man.

The 41-year-old actor famously suited up as the web-slinging Marvel hero in 2012′s The Amazing Spider-Man and again in a 2014 sequel. He even came back to the role years later in 2021′s Spider-Man: No Way Home.

During a recent interview, Andrew admitted to remembering his audition process “very well.” However, he was sure that the part would go to someone else.

“I did the first audition and thought that’s that. I’m too old. I felt I was too told,” Andrew explained on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, noting that he was in his mid-20s at the time. “I know I got good genes and all, but I don’t know.”

He recalled thinking that he was not going to get cast, even joking that he told himself he’d “dodged a bullet, probably.”

“I was surprised to have been given an opportunity to come and screen test,” he added.

Andrew credited his acting coach Greta Seacat for giving him “an acting adjustment” that helped him get in the right headspace for the opportunity.

She told him to “treat this screen test as if … you’re making a short film with all your high school friends.” Her advice helped him approach the test with less concerns and made him stop feeling like he had to “get it right.”

Instead, he felt that he “didn’t give a f-ck.” Andrew said that he left feeling “really good,” but he didn’t find out until “months later” that he was cast.

He recently revealed if he’d ever suit up as Spider-Man again.
