Are motorcycle accidents on the rise in Lafayette?
LAFAYETTE, La. (KLFY) -- It seems as if motorcycle accidents are happening more often than not nowadays. A member of the biker community talks about the problem and how these accidents can be prevented.
Rodney Wooten, the Lafayette Cajun Harley Davidson Chapter Director, said a lot of riders on the road are not registered to ride bikes, which is necessary for road safety.
Wooten said has been riding motorcycles for about 30 years but took a safety course about five years ago as a safety refresher.
"I went and took the course again just to try to break my bad habits. Because at once you think you know what, all you're going to get hurt," he said.
According to the Lafayette Police Department, there have been 72 motorcycle accidents from Jan. 1 to Oct. 7. Of those, three were fatal.
For that same period in 2023, Lafayette had 77 motorcycle accidents, of which two were fatal.
Wooten has advice for all motorists to look out and help everyone remain safe.
"It's younger people on motorcycles that are not paying attention because they think they own the world. You can't stop it [a motorcycle] on a dime. Just please be careful. Watch out for everybody, because they're not watching out for you," he said.
