‘I don’t see the point’ rage Coronation Street fans as they blast ITV for major blunder with Gail Platt’s exit storyline

CORONATION Street fans have been left raging over Gail Platt’s upcoming exit storyline as they fear bosses have “rushed it” and won’t give her the ending she deserves.

Soap legend Helen Worth returned to Weatherfield as Gail Platt last month to give her character a final exit storyline.

But given his history in Weatherfield, not everyone’s happy to see Jesse – including soap fans[/caption]

In recent years, Gail has been spending more time than ever away from the cobbles and travelling to Thailand.

It is there that she apparently met her long-time friend Jesse Chadwick (John Thomson) – who is Eileen Grimshaw’s (Sue Cleaver) ex

Jesse explained that Gail’s “radio silence” had led to him making the journey to Weatherfield.

Their catch up led to the revelation that their pair had shared a holiday romance while abroad. Although the pair have insisted that they are now just good friends.

It seems Jessie has been brought back by ITV bosses after 14 years off screen as part of Gail’s exit storyline – perhaps the pair will depart the cobbles and head back to Thailand together?

However, Coronation Street fans aren’t happy about his return as they fume that his relationship with Gail “makes no sense.”

Taking to X, formerly Twitter, to complain about the storyline, one ITV viewer wrote: “So, not once in three years has Gail ever, and I mean ever, mentioned Jesse, let alone a holiday romance in Thailand….?”

While another said they would prefer to see Gail spending more time with her family before her upcoming departure.

“Don’t see the point of Jesse. Shouldn’t Gail be having scenes with all the people she’s known for 50 years?” they wrote.

“I think it’s fairly obvious the character Jessie has been hastily written in. Gail deserves so much better,” a third observed.

While a fourth viewer asked: “Does anyone actually give a sh*t about Gail/Jesse????”

Rationalising Gail’s newfound friendship-slash-romance with Jesse, another viewer pointed out that it is only because her ex-husband Martin Platt (Sean Wilson) is no longer making a return to Weatherfield.

“Martin should be coming back because Gail’s leaving and he was her husband. Jesse is just a random, makes no sense,” a sixth viewer moaned.

Helen Worth quits Corrie - My View

By Carl Greenwood, Soaps Editor

Actress Helen made her first appearance on the cobbles in 1973 as Gail Potter – and has lived most of her life on them and what a life it’s been.

Beloved by millions through the last half a century, Helen created one of the most iconic characters on British television.

Behind only Ken Barlow co-star Bill Roache, Helen has appeared in more episodes of a television series than anyone else.

She’s had more weddings – and surnames – than almost anyone else and buried multiple husbands – all but one ended up dead.

Three kids, four grandkids and a serial killer husband (and brother) – Gail has been at the forefront of Corrie for decades.

She’s been imprisoned, framed for murder, almost murdered multiple times, she’s survived serial killers, her own children and a concerning addiction to olives.

Not to mention countless street brawls with frenemy Eileen Grimshaw.

But through it all she’s remained a Corrie icon and her exit will leave a colossal hole on the cobbles – much bigger than the sinkhole that opened up in her back garden.

New Coronation Street boss Kate Brooks has her work cut out to give Helen and Gail the epic goodbye she deserves.

While another explained: “They had to adjust the storyline. They’re saying they met up in Thailand and have become good ‘friends.’”

Earlier this year Helen, 73, announced that she has decided to leave her role as Gail Platt after 50 years on the soap.

Helen first appeared on the show in 1974, half a century ago, and is one of the soap’s longest-serving characters.

Sean was set to return to the soap to be part of Helen’s exit storyline, but has reportedly had to “step down for personal reasons.”

Helen’s final scenes for the soap are expected to air later this year.
