The UN Human Rights Council has extended Richard Bennett’s mandate as the Special Rapporteur on Human Rights for Afghanistan for another year.

The Council requested that Bennett prepare a report on the Taliban’s “Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice” law.

In the resolution passed during the Council’s 57th session, the widespread human rights violations in Afghanistan, particularly against women and girls, were condemned. The need for accountability, justice, and protection of minorities and vulnerable groups in the country was emphasized.

The Council also stressed the importance of providing more resources and facilities for documenting human rights violations in Afghanistan.

This extension comes amid the Taliban’s recent decision to block Richard Bennett’s visit to Afghanistan. The Taliban spokesperson accused the Special Rapporteur of spreading “propaganda” and declared that he would no longer be allowed to enter the country.

The UN Human Rights Council condemned the Taliban’s actions, stating that this decision is a clear violation of human rights and severely undermines efforts for transparency and accountability regarding human rights abuses in Afghanistan.

The current human rights situation in Afghanistan remains dire, particularly with the Taliban’s restrictions on education beyond sixth grade and the ban on women’s employment. These restrictions disproportionately affect women and girls, further exacerbating the humanitarian crisis.

The humanitarian situation is worsening, with widespread poverty and limited access to essential services. As the Taliban enforces strict laws, Afghan citizens, especially women, are facing severe hardships, including lack of education, employment, and basic rights.

In light of these ongoing challenges, international efforts like those of Richard Bennett are critical in documenting abuses and advocating for the rights of the Afghan people. However, the Taliban’s obstruction of such missions poses significant obstacles to achieving meaningful change.
