Itumeleng Moreroa: South Africa’s spirit shines at the WBSC Baseball 5 World Cup

South Africa’s journey at the WBSC Baseball5 World Cup Hong Kong 2024 has been marked by resilience and optimism, despite the challenges faced early on.

After losing key player Sylvester Maredi, one of four players returning after helping South Africa finish seventh at the 2022 edition in Mexico City, with a sprained ankle during the first game against Cuba, the world No. 6 struggled for rhythm and results during the Opening Round.

A close 9-7, 6-5 defeat to Hong Kong, China - a team they beat two years ago - and 6-4, 4-5, 7-0 loss to Chinese Taipei were two out of five defeats which saw them finish sixth in Pool A.

Itumeleng Moreroa, another stalwart from the 2022 campaign, is hopeful of better results with the start of the Super Round on Thursday. “The tournament is not going as well as planned, but we’re still having fun,” she remarked with a smile. “We’re still waiting to get that W, but yeah, we’re getting there.

"We’re gunning for our first win, that’s what we’re aiming for now,“ Moreroa added. "[But] losing Sylvester was really tough because he plays a very important role in our team.”

For the 23-year-old and her team, the competition has been more than just about the scoreline. It's been a learning experience - both in terms of gameplay and team dynamics. “One of the main lessons we've taken from this tournament is that if you keep your head down, then the other teams are going to capitalize,” she said, emphasizing the need to stay alert and focused. The tournament has also provided valuable insights into the strengths of their opponents as well as the team's areas for growth.

One of Moreroa’s favourite moments of the tournament so far have revolved around the camaraderie she shares with her teammates. “The best moment for me would be just having my teammates here,” she said.

The strong sense of unity within the South African squad has been greatly helped them navigate the tough matches and keep their spirits high. Despite the hurdles, her optimism and competitive spirit remain strong, as she and her teammates look to finish the tournament on a high note.
