Over 380 Afghan workers deported from Iran’s Lorestan in past 6 months

Farhad Nasiri-Nia, the Director-General of Cooperation, Labor, and Social Welfare in Lorestan Province, Iran, announced that 384 Afghan workers have been identified and deported over the past six months.

He added that employing undocumented migrants in the province’s economic units is prohibited.

The Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA) reported on Wednesday, October 9 that undocumented migrants in this province are often employed in challenging jobs such as brick-making, digging wells, carrying goods, and farming due to their lower costs.

According to the report, Iranian officials have inspected 626 economic production units in this province in the past six months, and over 100 units have been fined.

The Director-General emphasized that continuous daily inspections have been scheduled for economic units in the province to prevent the employment of undocumented foreign nationals in workshops.

IRNA also reported that 15 employers were referred to the judicial authorities for employing undocumented migrants during these inspections.

The Iranian government’s strict enforcement against employing undocumented Afghan workers reflects the broader immigration challenges faced by the region.

The focus on penalizing employers highlights the state’s intent to regulate labour practices while addressing the demand for cheap labour in hard, labour-intensive jobs.

With ongoing inspections and legal actions, this issue remains critical in the province’s labor and economic sectors. Further measures may be necessary to balance labor needs and legal immigration processes.
