Local elementary students partake in national bike and walk to school day
SCHOHARIE, N.Y. (NEWS10) - Schoharie Elementary students participated in National Bike and Walk to School Day on Wednesday. Nearly 41 students went along for the 1 mile walk, bike ride, or scooter ride. The students took off from the Schoharie Free Library accompanied by parents, staff, and their fellow classmates.
The ride was led by their principal, Andrea Polikoski, who took students from the library on Knower Avenue, to Grand Street, then Main Street, and finally to the school. Polikoski said there are several reasons as to why the school participates in the national day.
“So we do this every year, we have been doing it for a few years with our EPTSO because we live in a rural community and we believe in exercise and getting together,” Polikoski said.
Students across the country also did the same thing at their schools, as it’s all part of the national day. It’s goal is to get students involved in independently getting to school, knowing local routes, and feeling safe.
“We do have a walking community within a mile of the school, and a lot of parents drop their kiddos off," Polikoski said. "When they see we can take them on route, keep them safe, and it's such fun that they can start their day like this. We hope that they all start to get out there and exercise like we did when we were young."
